In order to calculate the power factor of an RL circuit, one must also know the frequency (f) at which the circuit will be operating. If we have a resistance of R ohms and an inductance of L henries, one can first calculate the inductive reactance X (ohms) of the inductor as follows:

X=2*pi*f*L (note: pi=3.14159)

We can now calculate the impedance Z (ohms) of the combination of R and L as follows:

Z=SQRT(R^2+X^2)

Power factor is R/Z
