Question :

The power of a motor pump is 5kW .

How much volume of water per minute the pump can raise to a height of 20m?

(g = 10m/s²)

Solution :

Power of pump = P = 5kW = 5000 W

Height to which water will raise = h = 20m

g = 10m/s² (given)

Time = t = 1 minute = 60 seconds

Let the pump raise m kg of water then power ,

 \frac{work}{time}  \\  \\  =  \frac{mgh}{t}  \\  \\ m =  \frac{pt}{gh}  =  \frac{5000 \times 60}{10 \times 20}   = 1500 \: kg

As density of water p = 1000 kg/m³ , hence volume of water raised =

v =  \frac{m}{p}  \\  \\  =  \frac{1500}{1000}  = 1.5 \:  {m}^{3}  = 1.5kl
