The rule of East India company came to an end after the first war of Independence. Queen Victoria became the queen of India. This change was done under the Government Act, 1858 which had the following provisions:
1. It transferred the power to govern India from the East India company to the British crown.
2. The Board of control was abolished and the Board of Directors had no powers left. The power was to be exercised by the Secretary of state-aided by a council.
