Methane by nature, in air or presence of oxygen burns and releases a big amount of energy. If the temperature exceeds then it may also result into explosion. This is because it breaks down into its basic components of hydrogen and carbon.

Chlorine as compared to methane is very much opposite in nature and hazardous. It also holds its strong oxidizing properties. In presence of oxygen the reaction taking place between methane and chlorine in presence of oxygen can also be very much explosive in nature. The reaction cannot be carried out under normal preparations.
