Given :

The present age of Mr. Ashok is equal to the square of his son's present age

And

One year ago , Mr. Ashok was 8 times as old as his son

To Find :

The present age of Mr. Ashok

The present age of his son

Solution :

Let The present age of Mr. Ashok = A years

Let The present age of his son = S years

According to question

∵  present age of Mr. Ashok  = square of his son's present age

i.e    A = S²           ..........1

And

One year ago , Mr. Ashok was 8 times as old as his son

So, The age of Mr. Ashok one year ago = ( A - 1 ) years

The age of his son one year ago = ( S - 1 ) years

i.e   ( A - 1 ) = 8 ×  ( S - 1 )

Or,     A - 1 = 8 S - 8

Or,    8 S - A = 8 - 1

i.e     8 S - A = 7       ...............2

Solving eq 1 and eq 2

      8 S - S² = 7

i.e  S² - 8 S + 7 = 0

Or, S² - 7 S - S + 7 = 0

Or,   S ( S - 7 ) - 1 ( S  - 7 ) = 0

Or,  ( S  - 7 ) ( S  - 1 ) = 0

i.e   S = 7  , 1

Here we consider Age of son = 7 years

Put the vale of S in eq 1

So,  A =  S²

i.e  A =  7²

∴  Age of Ashok =  49 years

Hence, The present Age of Mr. Ashok is 49 years

And The present Age of his Son is 7 years   Answer
