The answer is given below :

The present ratio of ages of P and Q are 4 : 6

Let, the common multiple = x

Then the ages of P and Q are 4x years and 6x years respectively.

Given that, sum of their present ages = 50 years

=> 4x + 6x = 50

=> 10x = 50

=> x = 5

So, the present ages of P and Q are 20 years and 30 years respectively.

Now, the sum of the ages of P and Q before 4 years was

= (20 - 4) + (30 - 4) years

= (16 + 26) years

= 42 years .....(option 3)
