Consumption of petrol = x LTR

Expenditure at Rs 60/litre = Rs 60x

Expenditure at Rs 75/litre = Rs75x

Percentage rise in expenditure = 15x*100/60x = 25%

To contain rise in expenditure to 10% only consumption is reduced to = y litre

Expenditure = Rs 75y

So 10 = (75y - 60x)*100/60x

0•1 = 75y/60x - 1

5y/4x = 1•1

y/x = 4•4/5

(x- y)*100/x = 0•6*100/5

Percentage reduction in consumption of petrol = 12%
