SOLUTION

GIVEN

The price of sugar is increased by 28%. Therefore a family reduces its consumption so that the increment in

the expenditure of sugar is only 20%. If the consumption of sugar is 15 kg before the increment,

TO DETERMINE

The consumption now

EVALUATION

Let original price of sugar = Rs 100

Now it is given that the consumption of sugar is 15 kg before the increment

So before the increment

Expenditure

= Price × Consumption

= Rs ( 100 × 15 )

= Rs 1500

Now the price of sugar is increased by 28%

So new price of sugar = Rs 128

Again the increment in the expenditure of sugar is only 20%

So new expenditure

 \displaystyle \sf{ =Rs \:  \: 1500 \times  \frac{120}{100}  }

= Rs 1800

So the new consumption

 \displaystyle \sf{ = \frac{1800}{128}  \:  \: kg}

 \displaystyle \sf{ = \frac{450}{32}  \:  \: kg}

 \displaystyle \sf{ = \frac{225}{16}  \:  \: kg}
