Punishment is the infliction of an unpleasant or negative experience on an offender in response to an offense. In ancient times, the sole purpose of punishment was retribution. However, in more modern societies the objectives of punishment include deterrence, retribution, incapacitation, rehabilitation and reparation.

Even when in ancient times punishment was inflicted as an act of revenge, now a days, punishments are given to an offender to make sure that the act of crime or the offense committed is not repeated.

This does not only ensure no repetition by that particular offender, but also as a lesson for anyone else who might think of committing the crime.

In modern times, punishments include rehabilitation, retribution etc.
