The Principal’s lunch has been stolen. Specifically, a chicken sandwich. Only two
students had access to the Principal’s office in the last hour, Sally Quasar and Arthur
Atom. The lockers of both students are searched and small pieces of evidence are
gathered. Sally explains that the crumbs are actually from a yeast package that spilled
on notebook in cooking class. Arthur explains that the crumbs are actually dried up
pieces of dirt from the baseball field. The Principal calls in Blake Busybody to determine
whether any of the evidence collected could have come from the Principal’s chicken
sandwich.
#1: What characteristics could be used to determine whether the evidence is from
chicken, yeast, or dirt from a field?

#2: Describe an investigation in which you assist Blake Busybody in identifying whether
any of the evidence collected may be chicken based on the characteristics from you
listed in answering #1.
● Provide the research question. Explain the purpose of the investigation and the
evidence you are looking for to determine whether or not the source may be
chicken. Background information should also be provided such as explaining how
the characteristics you listed in #1 will assist in your investigation.
● Identify the tools needed to assist in data collection.
● Describe the data you will collect and how the data will be collected and
recorded. Draw a data table, graph, etc... to show how you will collect and record
data.
● Discussion - What data would be needed to identify whether a piece of evidence
may be from chicken? What data, if collected, would clear Sally or Arthur from
any wrongdoing? Answer these questions and provide your reasoning using your
knowledge of science.
