The process of eating and being eaten is an interlinked cyclic process called Food Chain.  

  It is the process by which all the biotic components of the ecosystem are interlinked with each other and relates how they are interdependent. A food chain represents the transfer of energy/food from each trophic level. The producers or autotrophs, the plants produce food.  

  The herbivores eat the plants but will be eaten by the heterotrophs or carnivores. The animal waste from carnivores "returns to the soil" and becomes nutrients to the plants from which the animals produce food and the cycle goes on.
