Soil nutrients can be lost through the process of soil acidification caused mainly b acid rain.

Soil acidification is the process by which there is build up of hydrogen cation in the soil from acids such as nitric acid and sulfuric acid which are the main components of acid rain.

This process leads to loss of nutrients when there is reaction between base cations such as magnesium and potassium and the acid compound from the acid rain.

Soil acidification also leads to an increase in the rate of leaching (Leaching is the process by which water-soluble plant nutrients are lost from the soil due to rain water and irrigation.

The process of movement of nutrients from the soil by the acid rain is called leaching.

Leaching is an effect of acid rain and it occurs when the air spaces become filled with water and then the nutrients in the soil are washed by a downward gravitational movement.

Leaching leads to soil erosion which is not good for the soil.
