What is rational number?
A rational number is any number that can be named in tge form of a/b where a and b are integers and b ≠0.
➖▶Points to note:-
1) Every natural number is a rational number but a rational number need not be a natural nunber.
- We can write 1=1/1,2=2/1,3=3/1 and so on.
- This shows that every natural number n can be written as n/1 which is a rational number
- But none if the rational numbers lije 5/7,3/8,etc is a natural number.
2) Zero is a rational number.
- We can write 0 is anyone of the forms 0/1,0/-1,0/2,and so on.
- Thus zero can be expressed as p/q,where p=0 and q is any non-zero integer.
- Hence,0 is a rational number.
Multiplication of rational numbers
Product of two rational numbers=Product of the numerator/product of denominator
Thus, if a/b and c/d are two rational numbers, then a/b×c/d=a×c/b×d.
Devision of rational Numbers
You know that division is the inverse of multiplication. Also if a and b are integers such that b≠0 then a÷b is defined as a÷b=a×(reciprocal of b)=a×1/b.
