The product of Shikha’s age five years ago and her age 8 years later is 30, her age at both times being given in years. Find her present age.

●Now, accr to the question
(x-5)(x+8) = 30
x sq. + 3x - 40 = 30
x sq. + 3x - 70 = 0
x sq. + 10x - 7x - 70 = 0
x(x+10) - 7(x+10) = 0

*x = -10 , 7

◆age cannot be -ve so, her present age is 7

Let the present age of Shikha = 'x' years. 
According to the question. 
⇒ (x – 5)(x + 8) = 30 
⇒ x2 + 8x – 5x – 40 = 30 
⇒ x2 + 3x = 30 + 40 
⇒ x2 + 3x = 70 
⇒ x2 + 3x – 70 = 0 
Now, using quadratic formula, we get 
⇒ – 3 ± √(9 + 280)/2 = x 
⇒ – 3 ± √289/2 = x 
⇒ – 3 ± 17/2 = x 
As age cannot be negative, So 
⇒ – 3 + 17/2 = x 
⇒ 14/2 = x 
⇒ x = 7 
So, the present age of Shikha is 7 years.
