Product of numbers= 1200

Difference = 40

Let 1st number be x

Then 2nd number will be (x-40)

Product of numbers = x(x-40)

1200 = x2 - 40x

0 = x2 - 40x - 1200

0 = x2 -( 60 - 20)x - 1200

0 = x2 - 60x + 20x - 1200

0 = x(x - 60) + 20(x - 60)

0 = (x-60)(x + 20)

If value of x is 60

First number will be 60

& second will be 60-40= 20

If value of x is - 20

First number will be - 20

& second will be - 20-40= - 60
