"In 1985, a separate Women's and Child Development Department was set up under the Human Resources Development Ministry to promote the overall development of women and children.

Some of these laws have been introduced to ensure social justice for women and to help in implementing various schemes.

These include the prohibition of the Dowry Act and the Equal Remuneration Act. In relevance to the amendments to the and 74th and 73rd Constitution, women in the local autonomous authorities have reserved seats."
