Dowry prohibition act was enacted on May 1, 1961, under which the Indian government prohibited receiving or giving any property, gift or any valuable asset and considered it as illegal.
In 1984, the government of India made an amendment, and under this act, it is applicable for all the religions and demand directly or indirectly is illegal and if someone does so, they will be punished under the "Indian penal code" or IPC.
