Given:

The radius of circle is 5cm

Length of chord is 8cm

To find:

The distance of the chord from centre of the circle.

Solution:

Let , O be the centre of the circle.

AB is the chord = 8 cm

OB is the radius = 5 cm

OD is the distance between the centre and the chord.

OD is perpendicular to AB.

AB = AD + DB

AD = DB

AB = 2AD

AB = 8 cm

8 =  2AD

Therefore AD = 4cm

OD be the distance of the chord from centre of the circle.

We can calculate OD using Pythagoras theorem

OD² + AD² = OB²

OD² + 4² = 5²

OD² + 16 = 25

OD² = 25 - 16

OD² = 9

OD = √9

OD = 3cm

Final answer:

The distance of the chord from centre of the circle is 3cm
