The ratio of boys to girls in a group is 7:3. If there are 40 more boys than girls, work out how many people there are in total.

let no. of boys be "x"

let no. of girls be "y"

x/y = 7/3 ----- 1

acc. to the question,

boys = 40+y------2

now, putting this in eq. 1

40+y/y = 7/3

(cross multiplying)

120+3y = 7y

120= 7y-3y

120/4=y

30=y

therefore, girls = 30

now acc. to eq.2

boys = 40 +30 = 70

TOTAL = 70+30 =100
