The ratio of children to adults at a birthday party is 5:4. If there are 180 people at the party find the number of children and adults respectively.

let the no of children and adults be 5x and 4x..

it is given that the total no of people =180, so..

5x+4x=180
9x=180
x=180/9=20..

number of children= 5x=5*20=100
number of adults=4x=4*20=80..

which gives a total of 180..
