For any two surfaces in contact, the magnitude of limiting friction is directly proportional to the normal reaction between two surfaces.

The magnitude of limiting friction is directly proportional to normal reaction(R)

i.e F = μ R

therefore μ = R/F

Thus coefficient of limiting friction is the ratio between limiting friction to the normal reaction..........☺

Answer :

a) Coefficient of friction

Explanation:

Coefficient of friction is the ratio between the limiting friction (f) and normal reaction (N) .

Mathematically , it can be expressed as :

 \mu = \dfrac{f}{N}

In the given figure ,

μ = Limiting friction/ Normal reaction

μ = ZY/OY

μ = Perpendicular/Base

μ = tan∅

Limiting friction is the maximum friction between two stationary surfaces in contact with each other . To make a body move , this frictional force needed to be overcome . When force applied increases than that to limiting friction value , the object starts to move.

There are two other types of frictions:

1) Static friction : It works when the body is static (at rest) .

2) Kinetic friction : It works when the body is moving.
