Answer:

The ratio of number of atoms present in a simple cubic, body centered cubic and face centered cubic structure is 1 : 2 :4.

Explanation:

  1. In case of a simple cubic structure atoms are present only at corners of each cube. As each atom at the corner is shared with 8 cubes, the effective no. of atoms in each cube = 8 X 1/8 =1
  2. In case of a body centred cube, one atom is present at the corners of the cube and one is present in the centre, the total no. of atoms in each cube  = 1 + (8 X 1/8)

                                = 1 + 1

                                = 2

    3.In case of a face centred cubic structure atoms are present at     corners and face centres of each cube. As each atom at the corner is shared with 8 cubes, and at the faces with 2 cubes the effective no. of atoms in each cube = (8 X 1/8) + ( 6 X 1/2)

  1.                              = 1 + 3
  1.                               = 4

Thus, the ratio of number of atoms present in a simple cubic, body centered cubic and face centered cubic structure is 1 : 2 :4.
