let the constant ratio be 'x '

so now let their present ages are
5x , 6 x

present age of p = 5x

present age of q = 6 x

after 7 years :

age of p = 5x + 7

age of q = 6x + 7

given that the ratio of their ages after 7 years becomes 6 : 7, so now

(5x + 7 ) : ( 6x + 7 ) = 6 : 7

product of means = product of extremes

(6x + 7 ) × 6 = 7 × ( 5x + 7 )

36x + 42 = 35x + 49

36x - 35x = 49 - 42

x = 7

therefore,

present age of p = 5 x = 5 × 7 = 35 yrs

present age of q = 6x = 6 × 7 = 42 yrs

Answer : p = 35 yrs , q = 42 yrs
