let the no of pens be = x
let the no of pencils be = y

pens/pencils = 3/2
x/y= 3/2
2x = 3y
2x - 3y = 0. (1)

and,

x + y /2 = 180
x + y = 360. (2)

(1) - 2×(2) = 2x - 3y - 2x - 2y = -360×2

= -5y = -720
y = 144

substitute y = 144 in (1)

x + 144 = 360
x = 216

hope it helps you

Explanation:

Given ratio of pens and pencils = 3 :2

Number of Pens = 3x

Number of Pencils = 2x

Average number of pencils & Pens = 3x + 2x2 = 180

5x = 360

=> x = 72

Hence, the number of pencils = 2x = 72 x 2 = 144.
