Unit of reta rdation is same as the unit of Acceleration (which is change in velocity per unit time).  Reta rdation is just that it is negative acceleration.

  ie.,   m/sec²   in SI system.

  and   cm/sec² in CGS system

The ratio =  m/cm = 100.

sha30: hw retardation is taken as negative acc.?????....suppose a ball is thrown up and upward direction is taken positive.....now as acc. of a body is positive when force acting on it is positive and acc is negative when force acting on it is negative....weather a stone goes up or comes down when we calculate its acc. it comes always negative....as gravity acts always downwards.....does it mean stone shows deceleration both when it goes up and comes down???
kvnmurty: The word retardation is used when speed reduces. So negative sign is wrt velocity..or speed.. When stone is falling it is not called deceleration or retardation
sha30: sir can we extend the same logic to say that a body is said to have negative velocity if its velocity is opposite to displacement.??? If not then y we use this idea in case of acc. only...??? isn't is safe to say a body is in deceleration if its speed is dreasing....
