Answer:

The present age of A = 18 years

The present age of B = 8 years

Step-by-step explanation:

Let,

Present age of A = 9x

Present age of B = 4x

Three years ago,

Age of A = 9x - 3

Age of B = 4x - 3

Also,

The ratio of their ages was 3:1

According to the Question :

 \dfrac{(9x \:  -  \: 3)}{(4x \:  -  \: 3)}  \:  =  \:  \dfrac{3}{1}

⇒ 1 (9x - 3) = 3 (4x - 3)

⇒ 9x - 3 = 12x - 9

⇒ - 3 + 9 = 12x - 9x

⇒ 6 = 3x

⇒ x = 6 / 3

⇒ x = 2

Present age of A = 9x

⇒ 9 (2)

⇒ 18

Present age of A = 18 years

Present age of B = 4x

⇒ 4 (2)

⇒ 8

Present age of B = 8 years

Therefore, the present age of A = 18 years and the present age of B = 8 years .
