Let the present ages of Kapil and Ranu be x and y respectively.

Given that x:y =4:5

Or 5x =4y ...(i)\

After 5 years, Kapil would be x+5 and Ranu would be y+5

Sum of their ages = x+5+y+5 = x+y+10

Given that x+y+10 = 46 ...(ii)

Solve (i) and (ii)

Multiply (ii) by 5 and replace 5x by 4y

4y+5y+50 = 230

y =20 years

5x= 4y : i.e. 5x = 80

Or x = 16 years.

The present age of Kapil is 16 years and Ranu is 20 years.
