X is the mirror and R is a point on the screen

Distance of laser point from X = 8cm

To find: Distance of point of incidence from X

Calculation:

From the figure below:

  • MN is the normal at the point of incidence i.e. O.
  • Let the angle of incidence be x, then the angle of reflection will also be equal to x.

From ΔAXO and ΔRBO:

  • ∠AXO = ∠RBO = 90°
  • ∠OAX = ∠ORB = x
  • And ∠AOX = ∠ROB = 90° - x

Therefore, both the triangles, ΔAXO and ΔRBO are similar.

For similar triangles:

\frac{AX}{RB} =\frac{XO}{OB}

Let XO be p.

Now,

\frac{8}{4} =\frac{p}{24-p} \\192-8p = 4p\\p=16cm
