Given:

The reaction 2NO(g)+Cl2(g)→2NOCl(g) is carried out in a closed vessel.

To find:

If the partial pressure of NO is decreasing at the rate of 21 torr/min, what is the rate of change of the total pressure of the vessel

Solution:

From given, we have,

The reaction is 2NO(g)+Cl2(g)→2NOCl(g)

The partial pressure of NO is decreasing at the rate of 21 torr/min.

When 2 moles of NO are consumed the net change is the moles is, 2 product moles - 3 reactant moles = -1 mole (using the given reaction)

So, the rate change in moles of the system is,

a rate change of system = rate of change of NO * (1 system mole / 2 mole NO)

Therefore, the rate change of system = -21 torr NO  * (1 system mole / 2 mole NO)
