The reactions for the production of Na2SO4 from salt and sulphuric acid are as follows:
NaCl + H2SO4 → NaHSO4+HCl (low temperature reaction)
NaCl+ NaHSO4 → Na2SO4+HCl (high temperature reaction)
The sulphuric acid solution contains 75 % H2SO4. The salt which is used is dry and
pure. During heating, HCl and H2O vapours are formed and removed from the system.
The final product has the following analysis weight composition:
Compound Composition Molecular Weight
Na2SO4 91.48% 142.06
H2O 1.35% 18.02
NaHSO4 4.79%. 120.07
HCl 0.40 % 36.46
NaCl 1.98 % 58.45
H2SO4 0.00% 98.08
Using 1000 kg of the final product (P) as a basis:
1.1.Calculate the extent of reaction 1 and reaction 2? (7)
1.2.Using the extent of reactions in 1.1, calculate the mass of sulphuric solution
(F1) and sodium chloride (F2) in the feed? (9)
