The readingof the thermometer in hot water

Explanation:

If you are reading the thermometer then you record the temperature indicated by the thermometer, which is not the thermometer temperature.

Thus you get different temperatures:

The temperature indicated by the thermometer,

The thermometer temperature if self

The (average?) water temperature.

In an amount of water different points may have different temperatures.

Your question is the very basic reason to doubt people who swear divine accuracy in temperature measurement.

Accuracy in measurements, of whatsoever nature, has always some error. Thermal measurements are one of the least accurate measurement.

Electronics measurements are the uppermost accurate, and thus people uses computers and start to believe everything has a perfect accuracy.

Answer:

when we put thermometer in hot water thermal equilibrium will eventually be reached after inserting the thermometer in hot water. Hence heat is transferred from the water to the thermometer.
