Explanation:

The Hill reaction is the light-driven transfer of electrons from water to Hill reagents (non-physiological oxidants) in a direction against the chemical potential gradient as part of photosynthesis. Robin Hill discovered the reaction in 1937.

Answer:

The reason for calling the Hill reaction a light reaction is its dependence on light.

Explanation:

  • Hill reaction was discovered in 1937 by Robin Hill, and he came to know that the process which produces oxygen is different from the process that converts carbon dioxide to sugars. In this reaction, the light-dependent transfer of electrons occurs from water to Hill reagents (Example Dichlorophenolindophenol, DCPIP) against the chemical potential gradient direction in the chloroplast while photosynthesis.
  • Hil reaction is called light reaction because it is a light-dependent reaction in which light energy is stored and converted to chemical energy (ATP and NADPH). This chemical energy is stored and further used in the light-independent reaction which is followed by the light-dependent reaction. The light-independent reaction uses chemical energy and converts carbon dioxide into sugars.
  • The light-dependent reaction produces O₂, H⁺, ATP, and NADPH.
