The south east trade winds, after crossing the equator get deflected due to the colioris effect and thus becomes the south-west winds which gather moisture from the ocean, and go towards india during summer, when a low pressure area is created. The rain falls when it hits the mountains of the western ghats, which result in the leeward side getting little or no rain, and the wind ward side receives most of the rain.

The rain is too much more near the ghat areas that is why it is called as shadow area and also there is constant growth in f trees which look like canopy and even the sun rays don't reach the level ground as their are tall trees .....
