The refractive index of glass with respect to air is 1.65 and that of water w.r.t. air is 1.33. Calculate the refractive index of water w.r.t. glass.

refractive index of water w.r.t. glass.

= refractive index of water/ refractive index of glass

=1.33/1.65

=0.8

Given :

refractive index of glass with respect to air = R_{g} =  1.65

refractive index  of water w.r.t. air  = R_{w} = 1.33

To Find :

refractive index of water w.r.t. glass = R_{wg} = ?

Explanation :

R_{wg} = \frac{R_{w} }{R_{g} }

      =  \frac{1.33}{1.65}

= 0.806

Hence :

refractive index of water w.r.t. glass = 0.806
