Answer :

Given -

  • The refractive index of glass with respect to water = 3/2
  • The refractive index of water with respect to air = 1.33

To Find -

  • Speed is light in Glass ?
  • Speed of light in Water ?

Solution -

Refractive index = Speed of light in medium 1/Speed of light in medium 2

Case 1 : Refractive index of water with respect to air.

1.33 = Speed of light in water/Speed of light in air

We know that, speed speed of light in air or vacuum is 3 × 10⁸ m/s.

Hence, 1.33 = Speed of light in water/3 × 10⁸

Speed of light in water = 1.33 × 3 × 10⁸

Hence, Speed of light in water = 3.99 × 10⁸ m/s

Case 2 : Refractive index of glass with respect to water.

3/2 = Speed of light in glass/Speed of light in water

We found out that : Speed of light in water = 3.99 × 10⁸ m/s.

Hence, 3/2 = Speed of light in glass/3.99 × 10⁸

2 * Speed of light in water = 3.99 × 3 × 10⁸

Speed of light in water = 11.97/2 × 10⁸ m/s

Speed of light in water = 5.985 × 10⁸ m/s
