(i) As water has the lowest refractive index, it is the rarest medium.

(ii) As diamond has the highest refractive index, it is the densest medium.

(iii) The formula for refractive index of a medium is (speed of light in vacuum)/(speed of light in the medium). Hence we can say that speed of light in the medium is inversely proportional to the refractive index of the medium.

Therefore, the ascending order for speed of light is diamond < glass < water

(iv) Refractive index of diamond w.r.t. glass = (Refractive index of diamond)/(Refractive index of glass)

⇒ Refractive index of diamond w.r.t. glass = 2.42 / 1.5 = 1.6133
