velocity gradient $$=\dfrac{dv}{dx}$$, where $$dv$$ is relative velocity of two consecutive layers, and $$dx$$ is the perpendicular distance between the layers

$$\Rightarrow $$ velocity gradient $$=\dfrac{dv}{dx}=\dfrac{8}{0.1}=80cm^{-1}$$
