The Indian government statistics for the year 2017 shows the highest rise in the renewable energy production and thermal power plants. It indicates that industrial sector in India consumes the largest fraction of energy. This is true globally for almost every country that thrives on industrial production.
The greatest energy consumption is electricity in the residential sector, which is very low compared to energy used in the industrial sector.

It consumes about 37 % of the energy.
