of second wire equal y

so

in series total resistance equal

X+y=25

now

X=25-y. ..,......1 equation

in parallel total resistance equal

1/X+1/y=1/6

now putting value of x

1/25-y+1/y =1/6

L.C.M=y(25-y)

so

y+25-y/y(25-y)=1/6

25/y(25-y) =1/6

on cross multiplying

150=25y-y^2

y^2-25y+150=0

y^2-10y-15y+150=0 (by Mid term split)

y(y-10)-15(y-10)

(y-10)(y-15)

y=10;15
