They mean to say that it was a mere sepoy mutiny in which the Indian soldiers fought with the Britishers as the Britishers forced them to bite the greased cartridges of Enfield rifles which were said to be greased with the fat of cows and pigs. Hindus consider Ed cows as holy and Muslims ignored pigs.So they fought against the Britishers.
