Many priests were as poor as parishioners because revolutionaries do not attack poverty.

At that time, the French community was separated into three Estates. The first estate was the clergy, the second estate was the nobility and the third estate was common people. The first two Estates had many privileges by birth. They were excluded from taxes whereas the third a state had to pay taxes and the people belonging to clergy estate was the powerful leaders of the church used to dominate the third estate very badly and overburdened by demands.
