The rise of Afrikaner nationalism:

• During World War II, South African opposition to the country's participation in the war against Nazi Germany led to the National Party's election to power in 1948 and the implementation of apartheid policies, culminating in Afrikaner nationalistic mobilization in 1961, when the country resigned from the British Commonwealth and became a republic.

• Along with apartheid, the National Party government pursued a social conservatism policy. Gambling and other vices were prohibited because they were deemed to be incompatible with the "Afrikaner way of life."
