Increased demand for assistance from families and communities has led to a substantial reinvestment in a rapidly changing family support sector. In this paper, a number of central themes in the development and provision of family support are explored,particularly as they apply to the prevention of child abuse and other family violence in the twenty-first century. The first half of the twentieth century was not notable for changes to child welfare practice, but it did see the state taking greater responsibility for looking after childrens welfare, and the increased use of legislation to enforce appropriate standards of care. It is generally agreed that modern professional (and subsequently public) interest in child maltreatment, sometimes known as the second wave of the child rescue movement
