Chlorine as chloride ion is an essential component of most bodily fluids. Iodine is essential to life. It is part of the thyroxine molecule, a thyroid gland hormone that controls growth. Boron is required for the maintenance of bone and normal blood levels of estrogen and testosterone.

Some metals serve critical functions in the human body. Iron is a necessary component of hemoglobin in red blood cells. Copper, manganese, zinc, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, and selenium are all required as enzyme cofactors or prosthetic groups, and human disease results if the diet is deficient in the metals.

They are maintaining the proper pH in the body .

Increased in the metal ions cause basic pH.

While increasing in non metal ion decrease the pH and cause acidic.

Hence ,both ions should be in proper concentrations so as to maintain the normal pH in body not too basic nor too acidic.
