 a. France before the French revolution was based on strict social stratification, a society based on the system of estates with king at the apex , followed by the nobility  who constituted the second estate.
b.  Third Estate represented the common people both rich and poor of France, it mainly comprised of peasants ,artisans, even businessmen, official, lawyers. 
c. The peasants in the third estate,   were mainly engaged in subsistence farming, owned no land and were deprived of political rights
d.  The members of the third estate were burdened with taxes, which was levied on them by the state.
e. Members of the third estate, including the peasants had to pay some direct taxes to the state, this would include taxes on income, taxes on agricultural produce.
f. Besides direct taxes, indirect taxes were also paid by the third estate. This included taxes on articles that were consumed like salt, tobacco etc.
g. Women from the third estates were involved in small jobs, some sold fruits, flowers, some were employed as domestic servants
h. It was the Third category that is Third estate of people who rebelled against the old regime and demanded change.
