There's a simple rule. If something goes up by 1/n %, then in order to get it back to its initial value, it has to go down by 1 / (n+1) %.
Here, the salary goes up by 40 %.
Express it in fraction, 40/100= 2/5
In 1/n form, 1/(5/2).
To get it back to its initial value,
1/(5/2+1)= 1/(7/2)= 2/7
2/7 is nothing but 28. 56 % (change the fraction 2/7 into percentage by multiplying with 100).
I hope this answers your question sufficiently. Happy learning.
