Solution:

The sale price (including tax) of the chair = Rs. 8340

The rate of sales tax = 17%

Let's assume "x" represents the original cost price of the chair

∴ The amount of sales tax = 17% of the original cost = $\frac{17}{100}x = Rs.\: 0.17x$

We know,

$\boxed{\bold{Sales \:price = Original \:price + Tax\:amount}}$ ..... (i)

Therefore, on substituting the values in (i), we get

$8340 = x + 0.17x$

$\implies 8340 = 1.17x$

$\implies x = \frac{8340}{1.17}$

$\implies \bold{x = 7128.20}$

Thus, the original price of the chair is → Rs. 7128.20.
