Given : The side of the small square is 4, and the side of the large square is 6

To Find : area of the red shape.

Solution:

Area of Small  Sqaure = 4 x 4 = 16 sq units

Sides of squares are parallel

Triangle above small square and triangle on base of smaller square are similar

Hence    a/4  = (6 - 4)/6

=> a = 4/3

4 - (4/3) = 8/3

Area of triangle = (1/2) * 4 * 8/3  = 16/3 sq units

Triangle at bottom of small square and triangle at base of small square and large square combined are similar

4/(4 + 6) = b/6

=> b = 24/10

=> b = 2.4

Area = (1/2) 4 * 2.4  =   4.8 sq units

Area of Red shape =  16  - 16/3  - 4.8

= 32/3 - 4.8

= (32 - 14.4)/3

= 17.6/3

= 5.867 sq units

area of the red shape.

= 5.867 sq units
