The silver salt of a monobasic acid on ignition have 60 % of Ag.

we have to find the molecular mass of the acid.

solution : here,

equivalents of silver salt = equivalents of silver

⇒mass of silver salt taken /equivalent mass of silver salt = mass of silver left/equivalent mass of silver

⇒100g/E = 60g/108g [ as equivalent mass of silver = 108g ]

⇒E = 180g

now molecular mass of acid = equivalent mass of silver salt - equivalent mass of silver + basicity

= 180 - 108 + 1

[ monobasic acid so basicity = 1 ]

= 73 g/mol

Therefore molecular mass of the acid is 73 g/mol
