Explanation:
On a day when many will recall the 50th anniversary of the tragic air raid on Pearl Harbor, some will gather in Enid to celebrate an aeronautic event that occurred almost 30 years earlier.
It was in December 1911 that Clyde Cessna overcame 13 earlier crashes and flew his first successful flight.
After that seven-minute flight, Cessna went on to build an airplane manufacturing plant in Wichita that evolved into Cessna Aircraft Co. His airplanes introduced the pleasure of private flying to thousands of pilots throughout the world.
The fate of Cessna's first plane that he flew in Enid, "The Silver Wing," is unknown.
